In this time of always becoming
I stretch across the moment.
All the nows peel away.
All is motion.
Where is the still point?
Passion meets action
breaking my mind open.
Stumbling into the packed emptiness
I hold the question:
Where is the dark?
I thought I would drown in blackness.
I could not imagine the terror of the light
with its insistent joy beating all around.
I step forward,
feeling my perfect motion
always falling into more of what I am.

What kind of Mettler-based dance experience do I need?
Experienced creative dancers are comfortable both leading and following in group improvisations. They have a base of knowledge regarding the elements of dance and the use of the body as an instrument to objectively shape the material of movement. You will get the most out of this Retreat if you are familiar with the concept of organic dance form and using natural movements to create satisfying outer expressions, both alone and in relation to other dancers.

Where can I get experience before January 2018
Mettler Studios' Website lists workshops, courses and classes that it sponsors. You may also order books and other materials produced by Barbara Mettler at this site.
Another excellent resource for current ongoing groups, workshops and classes around the country is the International Association for Creative Dance ( IACD.) This member-based organization was formed to promote and practice the principles of free movement expression developed by Barbara Mettler. The calendar section of the IACD website provides details and contact information for these groups and events.

I am coming to the Retreat: What should I wear?
Please bring loose-fitting, plain black clothing for our daily dance work.I suggest dressing in layers so that you can be comfortable whether you are engaged in vigorous activity or relaxing. Leave your watches and jewelry at home or in a safe place.
